Doula Katherine is the professional birth and lactation support practice of Katherine Monge, a certified doula providing compassionate, evidence-based childbirth, postpartum, and breastfeeding support for Spanish and English-speaking families in the Netherlands.
Doula Katherine was founded on the principle that no mother should feel alone or lost during her journey. Having experienced her first pregnancy and birth as a migrant in a new country herself, Katherine Monge provides the understanding and expert guidance she wished she had, ensuring you feel supported and informed every step of the way.
Meet Katherine Monge, Certified Birth Doula & Lactation Consultant
Hi, I am Katherine Monge, and you can just call me Ka. I’m a certified doula, lactation consultant, and perinatal educator specializing in supporting Spanish-speaking families in the Netherlands. I am originally from Costa Rica and have lived in the Netherlands since 2018. My second daughter was born here, which gave me firsthand insight into the benefits and differences of childbirth and pregnancy in this beautiful country.
My Journey to Birth Work
My journey into birth work is a story of professional evolution and personal calling. I’ve been a professional birth doula practitioner since 2022, but my work in the world of motherhood began long before that. I continue to work as a maternity, newborn, and family photographer, a career that beautifully complements my doula practice. While I’m focused on supporting families today, my original educational background was in International Relations.
The decision to formally train as a doula and lactation consultant was a direct response to my own life-changing event. During the pandemic, I gave birth to my second daughter by cesarean here in the Netherlands. I was far from home, without my family support circle, and struggled with the language barrier and a new healthcare system. I felt completely alone and lost during one of the most vulnerable moments of my life.
That personal experience inspired me to become exactly the person I wished I had by my side: a doula who speaks your language, understands your culture, and accompanies you without judgment.
Even before my daughter’s birth, my work as a birth photographer had already planted the seed. While documenting numerous births and cesareans, I felt an innate desire to do more, to move from being an observer to an active, supportive participant in a family’s journey.
This path was a significant shift from my original studies. Over 10 years ago, my heart found its true calling in photography, and that passion evolved into the profession that led me to this transformative work.
My Mission as a Doula
My mission is simple: that no mother feels alone or lost during her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period in the Netherlands.
As a migrant woman who experienced my own pregnancy far from home, I deeply understand what it means to face this journey without mastering the language or knowing the local healthcare system. I am dedicated to being the Spanish and English-speaking support that every woman deserves during one of the most important moments of her life.
A Little More About Me
I’m a mother of two beautiful girls (one born in Costa Rica and one here in the Netherlands) and have been living in the Netherlands for almost 7 years. This journey has been an emotional roller coaster of new beginnings and self-discovery.
I share a beautiful story with my husband, whom I met at an overseas conference in 2007. After a long-distance relationship, we married in 2009, and our shared adventures led us to this new chapter in the Netherlands in 2018.
When I’m not supporting families, I love reading, listening to music, and enjoying a good cake with tea or coffee.
